I do not usually make posts like this but recently I have seen a lot of content on Instagram, Twitter and I think tiktok too misunderstanding the meaning of intrusive thoughts, which may cause people experiencing them to be upset.

I have tried to shortly explain the difference of impulsive and intrusive and hope it will help people to understand and use the words correctly.

Reblogs are very much appreciated!

Yeah this. Intrusive thoughts can be GENUINELY horrifying, some of the absolute most vile shit imaginable, transgressing every taboo you can think of. And they are usually every bit as distressing, or even more distressing, for the person experiencing them as they are for anyone else hearing about them.

It's a pretty Known Phenomenon that a person who suffers from bad intrusive thoughts might open up about them to try and find some solidarity, help or reassurance, and then be shamed and berated for having those awful thoughts. And the fact that big parts of culture now thinks of intrusive thoughts as "that funny impulse everyone has sometimes to do a strange thing" probably isn't helping very much.

Intrusive thoughts come on a spectrum of severity, but they are not an indicator of the moral character of the person who experiences them. Think of them more like Tourette's or epileptic fits, they are something that happen TO a person, not something that person DOES.

I don’t know if op is aware of this, but this is very similar to a method I know about from therapy. If you can’t pick out the flawed parts of the thought, you can say it in a ridiculous voice to make it seem less valid. It really works! (For me at least)

image

Separating yourself from the thought can also help. It’s sometimes easier to look critically at something when you’re not the one who said it. This also reminds of thinking traps, which have helped me tremendously with my social anxiety.

(tip: be careful with number 2, ‘Emotional reasoning’. While just because you feel something doesn’t mean it’s true, simultaneously, your emotions are never wrong. They may come from thoughts not based in reality, but your emotions make sense from the thought that it stemmed from. I.e. “I forgot to submit my assignment on time. I am so dumb.”--> shame, anger. You are not dumb because you didn’t submit the assignment on time. AND it makes sense that you feel ashamed if you are telling yourself that you’re dumb.)

hello op here! yeah, this website came about because i wanted to put all of my skills from two years of therapy into one place, so i could access them easily when spiraling.

my therapist and i spent a session printing out pictures of ben shapiro and drawing speech bubbles where he would say the bad thoughts i have about myself. VERY funny in terms of situations to be in but very effective in terms of therapy.

i’m glad you recognise the skills in this and that it’s effective for you!

not every hobby is a special interest. not every interest is a hyperfixation. not every time you have trouble doing something is executive dysfunction. stop misusing terminology stop pathologising every aspect of your life

stevebuscemigf-archive

every offended person in the notes like "i actually have adhd so how dare you tell me to xyz" bestie this is not about you. this is about the ppl who went from saying "omg i hate messy people im so ocd" to "omg this show is such a hyperfixation of mine". if this makes you uncomfortable either work on your reading comprehension or think hard abt why the idea of something not being a Symptom is so unpleasant to you

MIKE’S HOMESTUCK HANDWRITING FONTS (v 1.0)

all eight kids and both cherubs, plus bonus vriska and terezi fonts. possible nepeta font upcoming. all vectors, as far as i know.

inspired by/mostly pulled from panels of the actual comic, so please excuse the weird kerning on some of them. feel free to ask which pages i ripped the writing from, if you’re curious.

color coded above for viewer convenience; actual fonts are standard black.

no numbers, caps, or special charas beyond the pictured punctuation, but i’m working on it. i’ll probably rerelease these with updated characters at some point.

.otf and .ttf files available for all thirteen.

A full, 58 panel long comic/slideshow about the two unnamed human and monster characters from the Undertale intro. Thank you to everyone who showed interest and wanted to see more! This is for you <3

So this is like…. really good. REALLY good. It’s not just really solid fiction and art based on a piece of media, but it does an extremely good job of telling a story within that universe, at a different place, at a different time, with different characters, and it STILL expresses the same themes utilised in undertale and essentially reinforces the thing that game says. SUPER well done!!
